Talk to me. Laugh with me. Create with me.

I used to think I had to wear certain colors and styles to fit in to my environment.  Not necessarily to blend in, but to fall in line with the norm.  When I was in TV that meant bright colors that stood out on camera.  But if I had two dresses that were a similar hue then I couldn’t wear them on back-to-back days because, well, because we just don’t do that!

The truth is there weren’t really any written rules, just the unwritten ones we told ourselves and took for gospel.

I would stand in front of my closet and look at the colors thinking, hmmm, I seem a little low on yellow.  I should probably punch that up a notch.  And then I’d go shopping for something yellow.  I quickly realized that on me, jewel tones worked best.  Pastels didn’t have the oomph I was looking for, but a deep hue would pop on the screen.  So, I started looking for royal blues, deep reds, and forest greens.

I spent so much money on things I thought I needed to have TV anchor style.  Did I like them?  Yes, I would never have been able to wear something I didn’t.  But were they me?  Nope, not really.

When I wasn’t working, all of those bright colors sat in the closet.  Instead I always reached for my trusty neutrals.  Beige and light gray have always been two of my favorite colors but I always worried that if I admitted it out loud, I would seem boring.

But now I am perfectly comfortable admitting what I do and do not like.  Because now I am free to express who I really am and not what I was trying to be on TV.  And personal style is all about what makes you feel like the best version of yourself.  For me, that’s never been bold and bright colors.

You may have noticed a move toward those neutrals lately in my Instagram posts, and that is not accidental.  As I go about the process of rebranding my company and my vision, I am going back to what I love most—neutrals.

Here’s the great thing about style, it evolves with you.  And when you are finally ready to acknowledge what colors, looks and pieces feel best to you, then that style really shines.  There is no right or wrong type of style.  Style isn’t about trends or what all of those fashion bloggers are wearing (myself included).  It’s about what you surround yourself with that makes you feel amazing.

And, yes, everything you wear should feel amazing.  Even if it’s just a pair of jeans and a t-shirt, make it a pair of jeans that hug you in all the right places and a tee that is fitted and polished.  And pick colors and washes that you genuinely love!

So, do what makes you happy.  And if that’s “boring” old neutrals then drop the “boring” and embrace the love!
