I am not the biggest fan of Photoshop.  It’s great for taking care of major issues with my photographs—erasing the giant piece of lint I somehow missed IRL, taking care of an annoying pimple, or widening shots to fit Instagram’s 4×5 ratio.  But there is always the danger of taking it too far, and I never want to be that girl who adjusts everything to make herself look perfect.

When Marc first taught me the art of Photoshop he included a little tutorial on whitening teeth.  He assured me that even the whitest teeth would have a slightly yellow tint in a photo, and using it wasn’t just for vanity.  So, I begrudgingly took advantage of this handy tool in every smiling shot, and it did make a difference.  But I couldn’t help but wonder, maybe my actual teeth really did look a bit yellow.

I am not a teeth-whitening rookie.  About 10 years ago I paid a lot of money to have my dentist make me trays and send me home with my own whitening kit.  About two years after that I spent even more money for an in-office whitening procedure with my dentist.  A few years after that, in an effort to save some cash, I tried those drugstore whitening strips.

The methods through my dentist worked really well, though I will never forget the shooting pain and sensitivity that would occur for a few days during and after a treatment.  While the strips may have helped a little, though the results didn’t seem very even.

Fast forward to 2018 and suddenly I decided it was time to start looking into a new way to whiten.  Luckily for me, right around that time Smile Brilliant reached out about trying their affordable at-home teeth whitening kit for free.  Smile Brilliant partnered on this post, but the opinions are my own.

I have to admit, I was a little skeptical at first. I mean, no dentist required? How was that supposed to work?  And how could the retail price of kit be under $200?  It turns out, the majority of the money I had shelled out years ago for whitening by my dentist just covered the office visit and the dentist’s time, not the actual whitening.  So, when you essentially remove the middle man, the result is affordable teeth whitening from the comfort of your own home.

I was in.

It didn’t take long for the kit to arrive in the mail with very detailed instructions on how to make your custom trays.  I was so nervous that I was going to do it wrong but Smile Brilliant basically anticipated all the ways I could screw it up and warned me about them ahead of time.  It ended up being incredibly easy to make the putty and get an exact mold of my top and bottom teeth.

Next up, I stuck the molds in an included envelope and they were off to a magical place where trays are created!  About a week later my custom trays arrived and it was time to get this whitening party started.

The actual whitening process will be different for everyone, depending on how much whitening is needed and how sensitive your teeth may be.  Smile Brilliant recommends 7-12 treatments that last anywhere from 45 minutes to three hours.

I started at 45 minutes and gradually worked my way up to an hour and 15 minutes.  My teeth are very sensitive, so I was hesitant to go much longer than that.  But while I had experienced sensitivity issues that seemed to last for days when I whitened my teeth years ago, Smile Brilliant includes desensitivity gel for use after every treatment.  It definitely made a difference and the sensitivity pain was minimal.

About two weeks and 10 treatments later, my teeth looked amazing!  I could actually begin to see a whitening difference after just a couple of sessions, which encouraged me to finish the process.

But the real test came in Photoshop.  About halfway into the sessions I began noticing that when I applied that same whitening tool to my teeth during the editing process, it wasn’t making much of a difference.  By the end of the two weeks I found I didn’t even need to use the tool at all, including on all of the photos in this post.
